The Spirit: J-Bar’s Junction Punch

The J Bar might still have that new bar smell, but it’s keeping an old, trusted friend on the menu:
The Junction Punch.
The bar might have a different name and clean floors, but the Junction Punch is still strong enough to knock even the sturdiest late-night (of age) partiers off their feet.
But it’s safe to say Athens is happy to have its old friend back. When the J Bar, formerly The Junction, opened its doors two weeks ago, it was the fruity swill that held the top-selling spot.
“We just understand that Junction Punch is an OU staple,” said Jake Stewart, general manager of the J Bar.
With a tantalizing triptych of vodka, rum and gin making most of the drink, the cocktail is complimented with splashes of Mixed Berry Medley, grenadine, sour mix and sprite. Something Stewart described as “sort-of an offshoot of a Long Island.”
The success of the drink is evident, but it’s origins, not so much.
“I’m not sure how it started,” said Stewart.
Stewart just knew to keep it on the menu, he said.
Bartender Benjah Miller supported the theory that it was probably spawned from the boredom of a creative bartender.
But Miller also supported the theory that an indigenous tribe of the rainforest delivered it to them—so you can choose whether or not you believe him.
After a few more dubious histories, Stewart shrugged and said, “Maybe they’ll make a movie out of it someday.”
Maybe they will, or probably they won’t. But either way, Athens welcomes back the orphaned punch that made us weak at the knees and even weaker in the stomach.
